The 99 Names: Where We Begin

Here's something a little uncomfortable to admit. Most of us can rattle off the names of our favourite footballers, the specs of a phone we're saving up for, maybe even the full cast of a show we binged last month. But ask us to name even ten of the Names of Allah (with the meaning, not just sound), and things get quiet.

That's not a guilt trip. It's just where a lot of us are, and it's honestly a good place to start, because it means there's somewhere to go.

We turn to Allah constantly, we ask Him for things, we thank Him, we call on Him when everything falls apart. But how well do we actually know the One we're speaking to? When you love someone, you learn about them. This series is an attempt to do exactly that with our Creator.

Why the Names?

The Names aren't trivia. They're how Allah has chosen to introduce Himself to us. Every name is a doorway into His mercy, His power, His wisdom, His nearness. Learn what Ar-Rahman really means and your du'a changes, trust me. Sit with Al-Wakeel and your anxiety loosens its grip. These aren't abstract labels, they're meant to be lived.

There's also a well-known encouragement in the Sunnah to engage with these Names — to learn them, understand them, and act by them. That's the spirit of this series. Not memorising a list to tick a box, but letting each name reshape a little of how we see Allah and ourselves.

Abu Hurairah narrates:

Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e. one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise.

[Sahih Al-Bukhari, 6410]

How this series will work

We'll take the Names one at a time. For each, we'll look at what it means and what it actually changes about how we live and pray. No heavy jargon, no assuming you already know Arabic grammar, but just an honest walk through the most beautiful subject there is.

You don't need to read these in order, though I think it'll help, and you don't need to memorise anything (even though I highly encourage you to do so). If you come away from each post knowing Allah just a little better than before, that's the whole point.

So here's the invitation. Read one, sit with it, try to notice it in your salah that week. Don't rush to the finish line, because there isn't one, really. Knowing Allah is a lifetime journey, not a checklist.
